The Design Museum was founded in 1989. It started in a former banana warehouse which was situated in Shad Thames street of Bermondsey, London, England.
In 2007, the design museum was listed by The Times newspaper and ranked as number two in top five museums of the year. In 2013, the existing museum building was sold to Zaha Hadid Architects.
Annual Visitors: The Design Museum of Shad Thames attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually but its new building will target 650,000 visitors annually.
Collection: The Design Museum’s collection is an important record of the important designs and designers that have influenced and shaped our modern world. The collection includes all field of design including graphic design, furniture design, architectural design, fashion, digital media, product and industrial design.You can also buy products like books, graphic design, office supplies in the museum shop, as well as products related to the exhibitions.
Closing and Reopening of The Design Museum
The Design Museum will be closing for 5 months to shift and reopen in a new building located on Kensington High Street, London. The current site will be closing on 30 June 2016 and will move to the former Commonwealth Institute building and will reopen on 24 November 2016.
Former Commonwealth Institute building was listed in 1960 and £83 million have been spent for its transformation. This new building is approximately 10,000 sqm which is three times in area than the old building of Shad Thames street.
Outside of the new building, common household objects will be displayed. Items to be displayed will be selected through public voting via official website attached below.

The final event: Weekend Punk, a two-day celebration of the influence and legacy of punk design as part of the year-long festival Punk London.
New opening event: The new museum will open with its collection “Designer Maker User”.
